Bedroom bliss: ten steps to create a calm and comfortable oasis

Often, when we decorate our home, the bedroom is left until last because it is a private space that guests don't usually see. However, it's just as important to create a bedroom where you feel comfortable and relaxed as it is to design a welcoming living room. Ultimately, the bedroom serves as our zen retreat for unwinding after a long day's work.

1. A comfortable bed

When planning our bedroom decoration, we agreed that the focal point would be the bed. It should be positioned centrally in the room, ensuring an accessible walkway on both sides (with a minimum recommended distance of at least 55cm between the bed and the wall). If your room is small and this space isn't feasible, it might be better to place the bed against one of the walls.

Before purchasing a bed, we must ensure that the mattress, bed base, and pillows meet our needs. Generally, overly soft mattresses can lead to long-term back pain, while very firm mattresses may not be comfortable. If you are particular about mattress selection, memory foam mattresses might be the best choice for you.

Lastly, if additional storage is needed, consider a bed with a storage unit or leave enough space between the floor and the bed frame to store boxes underneath.

2. A replaceable headboard

The headboard, together with the bed, is an essential element in the bedroom. It defines the bedroom's style and can be crafted from materials like wood, natural fibers, or velvet.

If you enjoy frequent changes or updates, I suggest purchasing a headboard separately from the bed frame. Investing in a good bed can be expensive, and it's unfortunate if, after a couple of years, we grow tired of the headboard's color or find its wooden engravings outdated. Stores like Maisons du Monde or La Redoute offer a wide range of headboard styles at reasonable prices, enabling us to refresh our bedroom's look occasionally.

3. Practical bedside tables

Bedside tables can either stand alone or be part of the bed's headboard. While integrated nightstands have been popular recently, especially for small bedrooms, freestanding tables have made a comeback this year. Wooden tables with a vintage style are particularly trendy.

4. A bench at the bed end

A bench at the end of the bed not only enhances the decor of our bedroom but also proves to be a very practical and useful addition. It can be used as a spot to place piles of clothes before organizing them in the closet, or as a seat when putting on or taking off shoes.

5. Curtains that let in the light

We sometimes neglect to install curtains in the bedroom because many people prefer blinds. However, this is a mistake. Curtains not only enhance privacy and darken the room at night, but they also add character and contribute to a more inviting atmosphere.

Select curtains that are airy and allow light to filter through, ensuring the bedroom remains bright during the day while still creating a cozy space. Neutral-toned curtains without patterns are ideal, as they are easier to match with various bedding and cushions' designs. Lastly, ensure the curtains reach the floor for a more elegant look.

6. Comfortable bedding

When selecting bedding, it's essential to opt for textiles with ample dimensions (larger than the bed itself). For beds measuring between 140-160cm, a duvet cover of at least 220 x 240cm is recommended.

Ensure the textiles are natural and pleasant to the touch. Sometimes, it's worth investing a bit more in a set of linen or cotton sheets rather than opting for cheaper ones that tend to be less durable. Cotton is suitable for both summer and winter due to its qualities (freshness, softness, moisture absorption, etc.), while linen sheets are more advisable for summer as they naturally help regulate your body's temperature.

7. Storage space

To ensure a tidy bedroom, it's crucial to plan ahead for the amount of storage space needed for all our belongings (clothes, shoes, sheets, etc.). Ideally, large built-in wardrobes with hinged doors are suitable for bigger bedrooms. For smaller bedrooms, sliding closet doors are the best choice. Alternatively, opt for a chest of drawers with spacious compartments and use the Marie Kondo method to fold your clothes.

Remember that other small furniture pieces we've mentioned, such as divan beds, night tables, or a bench at the foot of the bed, can also help solve space issues in compact rooms.

8. Soft and warm lighting

For a restful sleep preparation, it's best to use warm LED bulbs, which emit a yellow light. Avoid using white or blue light bulbs in the bedroom, as blue light biologically stimulates wakefulness rather than relaxation. Placing multiple lamps in the bedroom can also aid in establishing a relaxing and cozy atmosphere.

9. A carpet underneath your bed

When selecting rugs for the bedroom, there are various options to consider. XL-sized rugs that cover the entire space under and around the bed, are ideal options for framing and accentuating the bed space. Alternatively, smaller runner-type rugs offer a more budget-friendly choice. Regardless of the type, opt for a rug that feels pleasant underfoot when you step out of bed each morning.

10. A touch of green

Though there is considerable debate on the topic, let me assure you that having plants in the bedroom is not detrimental to your health, and they do not deprive us of oxygen. While it's true that plants use oxygen for respiration, the amount of oxygen they consume is minimal compared to, say, the oxygen used by a person sleeping beside you. So, if you're a plant enthusiast but haven't yet brought them into your bedroom, what are you waiting for?
